Two Popular Aluminum Alloys: 7075 and 2024

7075 matweb is one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys with the highest strength. The alloy has been used in the aircraft manufacturing industry since the late 1940s, and it is still an ultra-high strength deformed aluminum alloy widely used in the aviation industry.

In the aviation field, it is mainly used to make aircraft skins, fuselage frames, beams, propellers, fuel tanks, wall panels and landing gear struts, as well as streamlined covers, turntables, remote controls and main components of space launch vehicles and engine devices. It is also widely used in the fastener industry, mainly for the production of various nuts and shear-resistant high-lock nuts.

As the temperature increases, the strength of the alloy decreases. It has high strength at room temperature and high strength below 150°C, but at 200°C, the strength of the alloy is only half of that at room temperature. The alloy has particularly good low-temperature strength and toughness. In liquid nitrogen at -196°C, the strength and toughness of the alloy are still very high, so it is widely used in the aerospace field and other equipment that needs to be in a low-temperature environment.

7075 t6 is very sensitive to stress corrosion cracking, especially in the short transverse direction. In the T73 and T76 states, the alloy's resistance to stress corrosion can be greatly improved, among which the T73 state has the highest stress corrosion resistance. The T76 state not only has high strength, but also has high stress corrosion resistance, and its exfoliation corrosion resistance is also very good.

2024 aluminum alloy has excellent strength and performs well at room and low temperature conditions, suitable for applications requiring high strength. After T3 state heat treatment, the hardness of 2024 aluminum alloy is about HB120. After more stringent T351 state or T4 state heat treatment, the hardness may be higher, reaching about HB140.

2024 t3 alloy is considered an aircraft alloy due to its strength and also has excellent fatigue resistance. Welding is generally not recommended. Typical uses of 2024-T3 Alclad aluminum plate are fuselage and wing shells, roofs, aircraft structures, and repair and restoration due to its glossy and smooth finish (2024-T3 Alclad). Its ultimate strength is 62000 PSI and its shear strength is 40000 PSI.
