In the aerospace field, 6xxx series aluminum alloys have always been the gold standard for lightweight and reliability with their unique performance combination. In addition to the well-known aircraft grade aluminum 6061, 6063, 6082, 6101, 6262 and other grades in this series also build a multi-element matrix of aviation materials with differentiated advantages.
6xxx series aluminum alloys are all Al-Mg-Si series alloys, which are strengthened by precipitation through the Mg₂Si strengthening phase. Its core advantages include:
1. Low density (about 2.7g/cm³), significant weight reduction effect;
2. High specific strength, the strength can reach 275-310MPa in the T6 state;
3. Excellent corrosion resistance, especially suitable for hot and humid environments;
4. Good weldability and processability, suitable for complex structure manufacturing.
6061-T6: Comprehensive performance benchmark
Features: Balanced strength (yield strength 275MPa) and toughness, good corrosion resistance, easy to weld.
Aviation applications: fuselage stringers, wing spars, door frames, landing gear support structures. For example, some secondary load-bearing structures of the Airbus A350 use 6061-T651 alloy, which ensures strength while reducing maintenance costs.
6063-T6: High-precision profile expert
Features: Medium strength (yield strength 215MPa), excellent extrusion formability, and high surface finish.
Aviation applications: Aircraft interior frames, seat rails, and luggage compartment brackets. Due to its easy processing, it is often used for customized precision parts, such as the cabin partition support of the Boeing 787.
6082-T6: The first choice for welded structures
Features: High strength (yield strength 290MPa), stable performance in the welding heat-affected zone, and outstanding fatigue resistance.
Aerospace applications: wing skin splicing, fuselage ring frame, helicopter transmission parts. For example, Bell Helicopter's rotor hub assembly uses 6082-T6 alloy to ensure structural integrity under high loads.
6101-T6: Conductivity and strength
Features: conductivity up to 40% IACS, medium strength (yield strength 205MPa), stress corrosion resistance.
Aerospace applications: aircraft cable brackets, lightning protection grounding systems, electronic equipment housings. In the power distribution system of the Boeing 737, 6101-T6 alloy is used for conductive parts and meets structural support requirements.
Technological innovation
We can use finite element analysis (FEA) to optimize the structural response of 6 series airplane aluminum sheets under complex stresses. For example, the wing ribs of Airbus A320neo use 6061-T651 alloy, and achieve a 12% weight reduction through simulation.
